Starting as a thumbnail sketch,
this design flowed quickly from design book to finished product. Forgoing
the usual task of drafting a complete set of working drawings, this chair
evolved on the fly. I was looking for something of a hall chair to sit
beside the phone, comfortable but not so much so that one might fall
asleep. The basic chair design of four legs and four stretchers is maintained but, as you can see the rear legs are uncommon as the arm rest is continuous, supported only by the front legs with through tenons and by biscuits to the back. The back splat is made of resawn 2" stock to
ensure even and book matched grain and sports additional taper supports
for the arms. It is unstained and was finished using five coats of wiping
varnish. The seat is made of 3/8 ply that was upholstered in black leather. |
